School Parliament at Robin Hood
Our School Parliament is made up of 4 areas: Health and Wellbeing team, Active team, Curriculum team and School Environment team. At the beginning of each year, every class elects four representatives to be members of the school parliament, one for each of the different parliament areas.
Our school Parliament is an important part of Robin Hood by:
- Promoting student voice by allowing all pupils to have a say and share their opinions and ideas as well as contributing to decisions that affect their school community.
- Developing leadership skills by working collaboratively with others and being the voice for their class.
- Encouraging responsibility to represent their class and teaches them about the accountability and importance they hold for their peers.
- Improving oracy and communication skills as children are to speak to their peers in class and feedback to the rest of the Pupil Parliament team, as well as developing active listening and negotiating skills.
- Increasing engagement as children feel their voice is heard in school and are more likely to participate in activities across school.
- Promoting democracy by children voting for the representatives and helping children understand civic processes.
- Building a Sense of Community by children and staff working together towards shared goals.
- Encouraging Problem Solving as issues arise from children, the Pupil Parliament can work together to solve these promoting critical thinking and solution oriented discussions.
- Preparing Students for Future Roles by giving them leadership skills, a good understanding of governance and prepares them for active participation in society.
- Fostering Inclusivity by ensuring every voice is heard in school, creating a more inclusive and representative environment.
Within meetings, the children discuss key concerns and how these can be improved or rectified. The children have a vital role in discussing these with the children in their classes before sharing these back with the members of the school parliament. They help to make decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that support the children’s learning and development, such as organising events, representing the school at outside events or ensuring the school is environmentally friendly.
